Curtis James Jackson III, famously known as 50 Cent, is an American rapper, actor, businessman, producer, and entrepreneur.
He is known for his impact on the hip-hop industry in the early 2000s and is one of the richest rappers in the world.
50 Cent was also ranked as the third-best rapper by Billboard along with Nelly and Eminem.
Jackson was born in Queens, New York City, on July 6, 1975. When Jackson’s father left, he was raised alone by his mother, Sabrina, in a South Jamaican neighborhood.
His mother was a drug dealer and when she passed away, Jackson moved out to live with his grandparents.
Jackson started selling drugs when he was only 12. His grandmother thought that he was in after-school programs but Jackson was actually out in the streets selling the drugs.
There were multiple times where Jackson got arrested because of his involvement in drugs.
The first record was when he mistakenly brought the drugs, gun, and drug money at school. The second was when he got caught selling cocaine at an undercover police officer.
The third time he was arrested was when a police officer uncovered a pistol, cocaine, and heroin at his home.
Jackson had too many criminal records so he was sent to a boot camp and served for 6 months. After his release, he received his General Education Diploma.
50 Cent’s Career
Jackson’s career started when he began rapping in a friend’s basement. Jackson used turntables so he could record over instrumentals until he met Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC.
Jam Master Jay saw Jackson’s potential and taught him how to count bars, structure songs, write cool choruses, and make records.
It didn’t take long for Jackson to make his first official appearance on “React” with Onyx in their album “Shut ‘Em Down” in 1998.
Jackson gave credit to Jam Master Jay. If it wasn’t for him, Jackson wouldn’t have been able to write hooks or release an album.
One year later, Jackson left Jam Master Jay and signed with Columbia Records. He was sent to a studio in upstate New York to produce his songs.
In just two weeks, Jackson was able to produce thirty-six songs. Out of thirty-six songs, eighteen songs were included on his 2000 album, ‘Power of the Dollar’.
However, Jackson got his big breakthrough when ‘How to Rob’, his single, was released.
This caught the attention of other famous rappers like Jay-Z, Sticky Fingaz, Big Pun, Kurupt, and DMX.
As Jackson’s popularity grew, he also became a new target in numerous shootings.
Before his song with Destiny’s Child was released, he was shot and hospitalized. On May 24, 2000, Jackson was attacked again outside his grandmother’s home in South Jamaica.
When Jackson was still in the hospital, he signed a deal with Columbia Records with a song he tried to publish, which was ‘ Ghetto Qu’ran ’.
However, the company dropped it and blacklisted Jackson by the recording industry.
He was badly injured from the shooting and disappointed with the company, but that didn’t stop him from working harder and putting more effort into his music.
Banned from producing music in a studio, Jackson went to Canada and partnered with different artists to record more songs.
In 2002, Jackson and his G-Unit group, Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks released ‘Guess Who’s Back’ mixtape.
Eminem was impressed with the album and persuaded Jackson to sign a record deal with Dr. Dre, who was among the people behind Shady Records under Aftermath Entertainment.
Now that Jackson was under a new company, he began to release multiple albums. His albums were sold for millions of dollars and won prestigious awards for them.
Aside from producing music, Jackson began a business career by investing in a variety of industries which includes film production, footwear, liquor, book publishing, video games, real estate, fashion, boxing, and financial market investments.
In 2003, Jackson found his first film production, G-Unit Films.
Afterward, Jackson established another film production company, Cheetah Vision, in 2008. However, G-Unit Films folded when Cheetah Vision became the priority for Jackson.
Cheetah Vision focused on producing low-budget action thrillers for foreign film markets which were distributed across the world.
In 2010, Cheetah Vision and the company was able to obtain $200 million in funding which helped to revive G-Unit Films in 2010 and renamed it, G-Unit Films and Television Inc.
As an actor, Jackson starred in a crime thriller film, Righteous Kill, with Al Pacino in 2008. He also starred in a war film, Home of the Brave, in 2006.
In 2012, Jackson formed The Money Team (TMT), a licensed boxing promotion company that was licensed to promote in New York.
This gave Jackson an opportunity to be able to sign with different boxing champions such as Yuriorkis Gamboa and Andre Dirrell.
On July 29, 2012, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Jackson became partners in their boxing promotion companies, SMS Promotions, and TMT Promotions.
Eventually, they parted ways by December 2012 leaving Jackson to take over SMS Promotions.
The reason was that the company needed to reorganize so it could protect the fighters they signed with and to protect its investment in promoting worldwide boxing.
